The Enduring Bison......
Harold Davidson Navajo Bison Fetish Carving
I am reminded daily of the various meanings and characteristics that the Native Americans have given all of nature's creatures.
The bison is known for endurance.
Wes and I walk as often as we can on a local trail near our home where there are bison and elk housed in large open areas behind a chain link fence. I see these magnificent creatures winter, spring, summer and fall. I watch them shed their heavy coats of fur in the spring, only to grow them back in the fall. We watch their newborn grow, and see how protective the mamas are of their babies. As I am snuggled in my warm coat, with boots, scarf and gloves, I see the bison standing stoic in the cold falling snow. In the summer as I walk past them in my shorts and sandals I see them trying to cool off in the sweltering heat under the shade of a nearby tree. I marvel over just how "enduring" these bison are....not only are they enduring, they are also endearing.

STORY OF THE FETISH POT
Three
hunters went to the mountains to obtain food but fell sick on their way. After
several days of futile hunting they got together, sat
on the
ground and discussed their misfortune.
They began to remember what the elders had
taught them. Take a ceremonial pot with corn and sacred fetishes inside and
offer earnest
prayers.
This ritual had been handed down for generations.
Finally, on the fourth day they found and
killed a fox. Taking the corn from the inside of the bowl they made a stew. Not
only were
they revived
but their sickness was cured.
The inside of the fetish pot becomes the
home of sacred fetishes. Sometimes medicines are stored there but always there
is a corn meal
offering to
sustain the fetishes. Guards inhabit the outside with a
"peek hole"
in most pots.
The representation of the pot is to appease
the spirit of the fetish and keep it happy. This harmony may be transferred to
the owner
bringing
protection and good fortune from the four directions of mother earth.
Story passed down by a Native American
elder.

Frog Serenade.....
Loved this lime green cutie!
I think this big guy was a baritone!
Took our travel trailer up to Bear Lake in Northern Utah for a few days....we had a creek next to our campsite that was literally hopping with frogs! They all had their own personalities and reminded me so much of the fabulous frog fetish carvings the talented Zuni carvers do...BUT.....these frogs were not doing their job....no rain in sight, just HEAT! I kept telling them to get busy and bring on the rain, but they were too busy happily croaking, and didn't listen! Check out our frog fetish carvings at www.indiansummer.com They get the job done! I do have to give these happy little frogs (and big ones too!) credit, where credit is due....they were very obliging when it came to serenading us nightly! RIVET....RIVET.....

Zuni Maidens and Zuni Corn Maidens Have Arrived!
Beautiful new Zuni Maidens and Zuni Corn Maidens have arrived on the scene at
